The Colour and The Space: Exploring Women’s Identities through Art
The Colour and The Space is an art-based research project that gives voice to the lived experiences of Muslim women at the University of Bradford (‘The Colour’ being the artwork and ‘The Space’ bring campus). Through the medium of screen printing, participants have transformed their personal narratives into powerful visual expressions, reflecting their journeys of belonging, identity and resilience within the university environment.
Initially, this research focused on Muslim women’s experiences on campus. However, as the project evolved, the screen-printing workshops expanded to welcome all women, creating a broader platform for shared storytelling and creative expression. This exhibition showcases a collection of final artworks, each piece a deeply personal reflection of identity and space within the university—whether capturing a sense of belonging or highlighting the barriers encountered.
By reclaiming these spaces through art, the project fosters a conversation about inclusivity, visibility and the role of creative expression in shaping a more welcoming campus. The Colour and The Space empowers women to take ownership of their narratives, using colour and composition to articulate their experiences.
